2015 Was Not A Good Year for Cabin Visits.

The picture of Ivinson Hospital above is anachronistic, but it represents where I slept most often in Wyoming during 2015. Of course the current Ivinson Hospital in Laramie is a more contemporary facility. Jenny and I were headed to the cabin in July when she had appendix trouble. A first visit to the ER, did not succeed in sorting that out. A second did much better, but there were complications and we stayed there for several weeks. She's well now and we appreciate the efforts of the hospital staff to get us through a dangerous episode. A side effect was that we only got up to the cabin a little bit and photos are scarce. Here's what we've got for the year.

A quick trip in June

I was fortunate enough to go to Scotland in late May/early June and so did not get up to the mountains until the middle of the month. When I did I was pleasanlty surprised to discover morel mushrooms in the mountains, more than 2 month after the season had finished in Nebraska. There were not a lot, but I managed to find a few.

Later On There Were Boletes (But Not Many)

Late July did also produce some boletes.

And we eventually had chantrelles this year too.

While I was there I got a visit.

The point of this trip was to get the cabin ready for fishing with Robert in early July. All was well when I left.

Not fishing with Robert

Jenny and I were to go up to the cabin and Robert was to arrive some days later. We did actually get there after being sent away from the emergency room on the 4th of July. But something was wrong and we went back the next day. Jenny had her appendix out that evening and she was eventually able to check out of the hospital around the 21st or 22nd of the month.

Robert did make it out and stayed in the cabin to fish. He did well in the evening on the Encampment. I wasn't there. But I did catch him fishing on Big Creek, and I was able to spend a couple of nights at the cabin while he was there.

Towering Accomplishments Redux

Later in the Summer, August to be more precise, I drove to the cabin en route to the Ethics Congress in Boulder. I brought with me a new Gin Pole of a larger diameter that I had fabricated out of two inch steel pipe along with some other steel parts, after getting a bit of advice from an engineer for the firm that sold me the pipe. His estimations agreed with mine that this would be sufficient for the job. Since the part was 12 feet long, and since the van was having mechanical difficulties I had to find a way to carry it on the Corolla.

At our destination:

Labor Day Weekend

By labor Day weekend Jenny was feeling well enough to accompany me to the cabin for a long weekend.

She even did some work on burning slash from trees I had felled and trimmed.

I did some work myself hauling the good spruce trunks to the woodpile and burning a bit of slash myself. I used a battery powered portable winch to pull the logs up to the pile about 200 feet or so. This required many couplings and uncouplings as the winch has about 20 feet of cable.

And I made a place for the long handled tools to hang on the porch.

One Last Quick Trip

From there I went up for an mid-October trip to get the cabin ready for winter. I was hoping to burn slash and in fact I did some. But in fact I did more re-staining of the lower parts of the cabin where the long contact with winter snow had worn off the brown paint. While I was at it I stained the porch rail and posts which had never been stained.

There was one spot on the timberframe of the porch where some creature had been hard at work gnawing on a joint. Very likely it was a porcupine in winter, but whatever it was, it wasn't good for the cabin. So I bent some galvanized flashing to protect the joint from further damage. While I was at it I also used a bit of sheet metal roofing to protect the lightning arrestor on the side of the cabin. A year or so back its predescessor had been damaged by the snowpack along the cabin walls.

On the last morning there I saw these visitors out my window:

All is well that ends well.

Late 2015 Stuff I Missed

This year the road over the pass did not close until early December, the latest I have known it to close. Unfortunately I was very busy at work so I did not get to take advantage of it remaining open. Maybe next year. By Christmas there were 52 inches of snow at the weather monitor at Battle Pass. This year is supposed to be an El Ninyo year with much precipitation. So far it seems to be on track. We'll see over the longer term.
